Contrary to what we are all taught about Hitler by pop history and our incredibly educated public school teachers, Hitler was not quite the racist or ethnocist he seemed publicly. People must bear in mind two essential things: Mein Kampf was public, and most of Hitler’s statements about race and ethnicity were made in the presence of an audience. Now, in his day racism was the norm; it was as acceptable as anti-racism is today. Non-racists in Hitler’s day were the hated and ostracized ones, not the racists. Thus Hitler’s true feelings may have been quite different than what he conveyed publicly. This in fact is the impression one gets from the private Otto Wagener memoirs.
